Pensacola Beach has not needed cleanup crews to walk the beaches (no tar balls yet).
Prior to Katrina, the EPA had identified nearly 400 sites in the affected area as possibly needing cleanup because of their potential impact on human health.
The groups, the Citizens Environmental Coalition and the New York Public Interest Research Group, told reporters that the groups believed that as many as 270 sites in Nassau and Suffolk Counties might need cleanup.

This expert could begin by working with local, state and federal governments to identify immediately available funding that can be used for a rapid assessment of the impacted communities to identify the homes that need cleanup.

"The whole place needs a cleanup, there's no doubt about it, but there's so much history there," said Don Russell, an op-ed columnist for Stamford's The Advocate newspaper and a historian who has written several books on the city's history.
