The May of Teck girls in London swapped chocolate for face cream.

Muriel Spark's The Girls of Slender Means (published 1963, but set in 1945) is the ur-novel of women living together: "love and money were the vital themes in all the bedrooms and dormitories" of the May of Teck Club.

Once home, she went to London in search of work, taking up residence at the Helena Club, which later became the model for the May of Teck Club, the setting for her 1963 novel, "The Girls of Slender Means".

I had lived in a sorority house as a student, and this social island became in my mind Spark's The May of Teck Club in postwar Kensington, an establishment that existed "for the Pecuniary Convenience and Social Protection of Ladies of Slender Means below the age of Thirty Years, who are obliged to reside apart from their Families in order to follow an Occupation in London".

In many ways, Spark's novels – tightly written, with their girlish ensembles and fragrant sense of place (Jean Brodie set in the rigorous corridors of the Marcia Blaine School in Edinburgh, Girls in the May of Teck women's hostel in London) are made for the stage.

The television season tends to begin in September, and ends during the May of the following year, which coincides with the completion of May sweeps.
