DETROIT — Nissan inadvertently gained some valuable insight into the durability of its electric car, the Leaf, when about two dozen of them were destroyed in the tsunami that ravaged Japan in March.
Low-temperature treatment was initiated when the flag leaf had half-emerged from the collar of the penultimate leaf (about 1.5 mm in anther length).
The Leaf gets about 130 MPGe (miles per gallon gasoline equivalent) and 75 miles per charge, compared with the Tesla Model S which gets about 89 MPGe and 265 miles per charge (and with the expansion of Tesla's Supercharger network Tesla owners will be able to drive from LA to NY by the end of this year).
When the leaf is about 20 mm long, the ligule is initiated.
At this stage, there is no distinction between sheath and lamina, but when the leaf is about 20 mm long, the ligule develops from the adaxial protoderm and a further intercalary meristem produces the cell division, which gives rise to the sheath.

When the sun shines, the leaf splits water — about a litre and a half per day — and after dark the residents burn the hydrogen in an inexpensive micro-turbine, which generates electricity till dawn at an average rate of about a hundred watts.
