Although poloidal flow is necessary to produce stretching, Fig. 12a shows that global St/Ad is larger than global ({mathcal {P}}/{mathcal {T}}) except for the large Pm case 2 where the two quantities are nearly identical.

However, these observations do suggest that the larger PM fractions are potentially toxic and should not be ignored during a move toward regulation of PM2.5, a view supported by recent epidemiological evaluations of the short-term health effects of coarse PM (Brunekreef and Forsberg 2005; Lin et al. 2002).
