Viking 2 achieved orbit on 7 August 1976, and its lander was deployed on 3 September, reaching Utopia Planitia, on the opposite side of the planet to the Viking 1 lander's position.
Two landers were deployed in the vicinity and outside of the coral habitat and measured multiple near-bed parameters, including temperature, salinity, current speed and direction and optical and acoustic backscatter.
