This was the first indication that basaltic ash may pose a respiratory hazard, through a well-recognised mechanism involving the interaction of reduced iron on the particle surfaces with hydrogen peroxide, which is available in the lungs or can be generated through the Haber Weiss cycle (Fubini and Otero Arean 1999).
