The conventional diagnostic scheme for lipodystrophy involves the extent of fat loss (general or partial) and inheritance (acquired or congenital) resulting in four categories of disease: congenital generalized lipodystrophy, acquired generalized lipodystrophy, familial partial lipodystrophy (FPL), and acquired partial lipodystrophy (APL) (1– 5).
