This paper explains how a chiller plant should be designed to enable the chillers to operate frequently with maximum performance.
The chillers are all ammonia-water thermally driven single effect chiller.
The electrical energy consumption in a multi-chiller system increases if the chillers are managed improperly, therefore significant energy savings can be achieved by optimizing the chiller operations of heating, ventilation and cooling systems.
This enables the chillers to operate frequently at or near full load to save chiller power.
Then a case study was performed, while the plant was in operation, to demonstrate the feasibility of the new coupling system, and a 9.6% chiller efficiency increase and total 23.2% annual energy saving for the chillers were reached, by optimizing the part load ratio condition of chillers and pumps.
The slope and intercept of the energy signature can be used to accurately predict the annual electricity consumption of the chillers and to evaluate the extent to which this consumption can drop when chiller efficiency is improved.
