The time to align the homologs to the query might be reduced by using the alignments implied by the families as a starting point to search for local alignments, instead of using BLAST to realign the homologs to the query.
Phylogenetic data obtained from an alignment implying predominantly insect VFTM sequences, showed that all VKR proteins effectively formed a distinct monophyletical protein clade (about 80% of identity between VKR of insects) which is closely related to GABABR (with a 92% bootstrap score)( Fig 4A).
