There are three different categories of ice: the ice sheet (enormous layers of ice that sit on land, whether that land is above or below sea level); the ice shelf (parts of the ice sheet that flow from the land into the ocean and begin to calve, or shed chunks of ice as icebergs) and sea ice (floating chunks of ice that grow and shrink with the seasons).

"It's worrying that land use has already pushed biodiversity below the level proposed as a safe limit," said Prof Andy Purvis, of the Natural History Museum, and one of the authors.
Another 30,000 hectares recently seized from the Saudi investor Prince Waleed bin Talal after it was determined that he had bought the land below market prices will be devoted to growing wheat, further increasing the number of hectares in production.
