Using a combination of reminder phone calls and texting greatly improved retention, particularly for younger caregivers who preferred texting to phone calls or had unlimited texting plans but minimal or no minutes available for phone calls.
The results showed that narration group outperformed on- screen text group in retention.
Furthermore, students using the new text exhibited better retention of the content when surveyed several months later.
We searched MEDLINE (1950 to May 2012), EMBASE (1980 to May 2012), PsycINFO (1806 to May 2012), DARE (to May 2012), Cochrane CENTRAL and CINAHL (1981 to May 2012) using randomised controlled trial filters, where possible, and free text terms for retention (see online supplementary appendix 1 MEDLINE search).
This review of published literature was conducted using a research equation combining these following free-text words: HIV, retention, and a list of all the African countries (except Maghreb) (figure 1).
