A town of 20,500, it has its own water system, and thanks to federal right-to-know laws created to warn residents about chemicals in their drinking water, Piqua's officials must test for atrazine and other substances and inform people of the highest concentrations detected.
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) from two atrazine-degrading bacteria and one non-atrazine-degrading bacterium were tested for response to the oxidative stress caused by atrazine.
But the people of Piqua never learned about those spikes from local water officials or the E.P.A. City officials test for atrazine only once a month in the spring, and the annual report sent to residents in 2005 said the highest level of atrazine detected was only 11.6 parts per billion — 80percentt lower than the peak measured by Syngenta.
Since local water systems test for atrazine as infrequently as once a year, the E.P.A. has required that the companies manufacturing the chemical, primarily Syngenta, monitor the drinking water of a sample of towns — as many as 154 communities — as often as once a week.
Thus, iron-containing mesostructured materials have been successfully tested for the heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of atrazine aqueous solutions using UV vis irradiation at room temperature and close to neutral pH.
However, population-level effects of atrazine have not been empirically tested for in nature and thus need to be evaluated explicitly.
Meanwhile, to study the effect of ionic strength on the adsorption of atrazine, a series of experiments was carried out with the concentrations of NaCl changed from 2.5%to10%0% and the pH of the initial solution remained at 7. The adsorption capacities of PA6 NFM and PA6/PPy NFM were also tested for comparison purpose under the same experimental conditions.
Two samples of water from each concentration of atrazine were collected within 1 hr of being mixed and taken to an outside laboratory (Exygen, Inc., State College, PA) to be tested for concentration accuracy.
We used the general linear model to test for the main and interaction effects of atrazine (continuous predictor and log10-transformed), food level, and dry down on angularly transformed percent survival at metamorphosis (during atrazine exposure), after metamorphosis (carryover effect plus density-mediated compensation), and on 13 July 2004 (net atrazine effect; Figure 1).
M. aquaticum plants adapted to the emersed state show less sensitivity against the tested herbicides atrazine and 2,4-D than plants adapted to the submerged state.
