"test layout" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when you are referring to a layout that is being tested in some way (for example, to make sure a webpage looks as it should). For example: "We need to test the layout of this webpage to make sure it looks correct on all devices."
A test layout is designed to figure out the multiple scattering effect.
