The International Cricket Council has been forced to shelve plans for the creation of a two-division Test championship following opposition from Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and, most significantly, India.
The competition will be held for the last time in England in June before giving way to a Test championship, set to be debuted in 2017.
Lord's was set to be the venue for the final of Test Championship, but after missing out on welcoming the touring New Zealand team for a five-day game, the ground may only host one Test in 2013.
And from 2017 the four highest ranked Test playing nations will battle it out for the World Test Championship, with the inaugural tournament to be played in England.
2013 may be the last time the Champions Trophy is staged, with the International Cricket Council keen to introduce a World Test Championship in its place for 2017, so there is one tournament for each format - Tests, one-day internationals and Twenty20.
The leading team would win the Test championship, while the bottom side would face relegation.
As expected, a death sentence has been passed on the World Test Championship.
(Unlike in the Test Championship, the rankings change after each game rather than each series).
Unless India embraces the spirit of cricket I wouldn't hold my breath about the scheduled 2017 Test championship being played.
The ICC's internal executive was bitterly disappointed that India was responsible for canning the scheduled 2013 Test championship.
