Though the two-year-long battle over the lucrative O'Hare International Airport terminal concessions contract appeared to come to an end last week when a deal with Westfield Concession Management was approved almost unanimously by City Hall, that contract has been brought into question thanks to a lawsuit filed by Chicago Aviation Partners, the airport's former concessionaire, Thursday.
The United States Maritime Alliance, an association of shipping companies and terminal owners, is demanding concessions on "container royalty payments," which the companies share with union members for each ton of cargo handled.
"In the old days, you went to the airport and bought a $10 hot dog," said Timothy Lowe, vice president for airport business development at the Westfield Corporation, which is responsible for food and retail concessions at Terminal C. Now, he said, "We want you to feel good about buying food at the airport".
They are replacing or improving existing terminals, updating food concessions and parking garages, or adding runways to keep up with growing demand.
Concession sales at Terminal 4 were 20percentt higher for the 12 months ended Oct. 31, and up 30percentt at the two duty-free shops, she said.

New funding sources for these strategies can be obtained through effective regulatory reforms and private concession schemes with global terminal operators for selected terminals.
