Following the distinction in Latin between idem and ipse, Ricoeur holds that the self's idem-identity is that which gives the self, among other things, its spatio-temporal sameness.
"Identity" and "sameness" mean the same; their meanings are identical.
The problem stems from the tension between the sameness in the object of experience (e.g. the same tune through its progression) and the temporal fluidity of experience itself (e.g. the transitions between heard notes).
On the contrary, it is the sameness of several, numerically distinct realizations of the same information-content, just like the sameness of a book in its several copies.
