This fabled city of silk and canals 60 miles west of Shanghai has been reborn as a high-technology outpost in the global economy -- thanks, in part, to the mice in an industrial building on the town's west side.
For a space program dependent on cutting-edge technology, the Outpost is a decidedly low-tech watering hole, so much so that the local fire marshal recently came close to shutting the place down.
The problems last year — which occurred during an era when New York has claimed to be a capital of technology by welcoming outposts of Google and Facebook and planning a new technology campus on Roosevelt Island — were disheartening to advocates of easier voting.
The state has aggressively courted technology companies looking for cheaper outposts from Silicon Valley in order to boost its economy.
