The problem is not just one of having money for technology but rather that technological networks have a greater possibility to develop and multiply in cities, always generating greater differences in performance between cities and non-urban areas and between large cities and smaller centres.
It is in cities that the largest technological networks take shape and where the "miraculous promise" of technology most quickly spreads.1 It is here that we unwisely place our trust in an improbable restoration of the past and/or in a new renaissance.
But these technological networks are also being used in fanatical pursuit of fundamentalist identity.
They are, in effect, calls to overcome the status quo, the state of political and social disengagement and apathy that these technological networks have created.
To an extent not fully appreciated by policy makers, the organization says, business travel is dependent on fragile technological networks that have already shown the stresses of a sudden strain.
Technological networks helped terrorist networks flourish; agents could ignore national boundaries, rely on remote financial dealings and use the Internet to obtain news, send e-mail and book flights.
These individuals tend to occupy prominent positions in the scientific and the technological networks.
At some point, however, the new technological networks begin to offer decreasing returns on investment.
Technological networks can act as capturing sources of many knowledge forms, both tacit and codified (explicit).
As will be shown below, this seems the case in large-scale technological networks (Fig. 4).
