The Royal Academy of Engineering also run a connectioning teachers project to provide support and connect teachers all over the country.
"With more and more programs springing up, there is a dearth of certified teachers right now, especially compared to the demand," said Robin Harvey, coordinator of the Developing Chinese Language Teachers project at New York University.
Additional work completed includes: increasing the number of women teachers; project management committees set up at local and district levels; mosquito nets have been distributed; and sanitation guidance has reduced instances of diarrhoea.
In Bridgeport, Conn., high school students help bring gardens to children as part of the Butterflies Are Teachers project, which involves a dozen members of the Horticultural Club at Harding High School.
"Many primary teachers, who had left foreign languages behind at O- and A-level, suddenly found themselves expected to teach one," says Chris Souvlis, who manages the DCSF's 2-week Primary Teachers' project.
To increase teachers' confidence in Turkish, Clinton is taking four members of school staff to Istanbul, Turkey, in May 2009 under the DCSF's 2-week Primary Teachers' project managed by the British Council.
