Many of these infants are also exposed to poverty and tuberculosis (TB), conditions that also lead to malnutrition [16] [18].
Since we assume in our models that either the gene W is up-regulated or the corresponding protein is activated by FGF and/or Wnt, and that this interaction is accounted for by the function k≤1, the TB conditions can be simulated by setting k = 1.
Among patients who died of TB, delayed TB diagnosis may be partially responsible.. Of the 38 patients who died of TB, 30 had disseminated TB, MDR-TB, or complicated extrapulmonary TB, conditions that are difficult to diagnose, occur frequently in HIV-infected persons, and have high death rates (13, 33, 34 ).
We cannot distinguish between three explanations for the high TB incidence in the later period: a) that culture failed to detect true smear-negative TB initially, or b) misdiagnosis of other (non-TB) conditions as TB, or c) a high incidence of new TB during follow-up.
