This method combines barrier measurements of encapsulating materials with accelerated lifetime experiments of encapsulated cells and enables to establish the barrier levels necessary to ensure the protection of a given device depending on the intrinsic stability and targeted lifetime.
However, a global barrier requirement cannot be defined, but has to be on one hand established in direct relationship between intrinsic stability of the device and on the other hand on the targeted lifetime and operating conditions.

It is indicated that, during the target lifetime, cluster size distribution continuously shifts towards larger cluster sizes and becomes broader.
According to ESS specification for the chosen reference target this value defines the targets lifetime to about 3 month.
The uniform distribution of the beam on target is required in some high power beam applications to prolong the target lifetime or to improve the beam utilization.
It is suggested that a change in the mass spectra during the target lifetime is caused by the variation of the free metal atom density in the aggregation region.
In addition, arcing and methods to avoid it are reviewed; this includes, arc initiations and their destructive effects (e.g. driving the process to become unstable, reducing the target lifetime and creating defects in the sputtered films), time required for arcs to occur, and finally, methods of avoiding arcs.
The elements of this achievement are: (i) the use of mid-frequency (i.e. 40 kHz) AC power in the floating mode, between two magnetrons, allowed the reactive sputtering process to be arc-free and hence eliminating the undesired effects of arcing in reactive sputtering such as driving the process to become unstable, creating defects in the films and reducing the target lifetime.
On the other hand, the failure probability of the mercury vessel directly subject to the pressure waves and the pitting damage increases gradually with proton-beam power and gets to be ca. 99.9% in MW-class target lifetime expected in the design.
Full-system based simulations using a customized GEM5 simulator show that reliability can be improved by up to 52% using the proposed DRM scheme in a best-effort scenario with 2 9% performance penalty (using a user set target lifetime of 7 years) over the case when no DRM is employed.
However, the design of effective networked embedded systems targeting unlimited lifetime poses several challenges at different architectural levels.
