In this technique, a high power pulsed laser beam is focused inside a vacuum chamber to strike a target of the material (in our case, calcium orthophosphates) resulting in a gaseous cloud of various atoms, ions, molecules, molecular clusters and, in some cases, droplets and target fragments, due to a thermal decomposition of the target (Dinda et al. 2009).
