The last time this many French people were gathered on British soil, a bunch of nuns made a tapestry about it afterwards.
At 7 p.m., The Times' Rachel Swarns will discuss her book, "American Tapestry," about Michelle Obama's genealogy, at the National Archives.
"It would be like finding Washington and Jefferson in a tapestry about America," Mr. Franses said, pointing to a distinguished-looking man with a distinctive mole on his cheek next to David.
On view are some 200 works, including paintings, drawings, watercolors, works of decorative art, furniture and tapestries, representing about 75% of the composer's collection, as selected by Rosenthal and Lloyd Webber himself.
The "Decorum" curator Anne Dressen noticed the tapestry trend about five years ago, "first in isolated instances, then more and more in artists studios, and finally in exhibitions," she said.
Saw artifacts are very few in number, and even the Bayeux Tapestry of about 1100 shows no saw in the fairly detailed panels dealing with the construction of William the Conqueror's invasion fleet; only ax, adz, hammer, and breast auger are among the woodworking tools.
For all their thousands of flowers and Christian imagery, the unicorn tapestries are about hunting, about using spears, dogs and noise to drive an animal into a pen.
But the flood of recent polling can still tell us a lot about the complex tapestry of views about government spending and debt, even if those views don't boil down to a single score showing which side is winning the battle of public opinion.
"Practically everyone who has written about the Tapestry has made suggestions about Aelfgyva, ranging from the seductively tempting to, frankly, the absurd," as a site dedicated to the tapestry puts it.
"There was the Courtauld, full of books about art, and yet all of the books about tapestry could be fit onto three shelves down in the basement next to the boiler, and they had all been written in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and the vast majority were in German and Flemish and Italian," he says.
