Here we describe the evolution of tandem instruments based on the CFR, from its introduction in 1993 to the current commercial TOF2 mass spectrometer from Shimadzu Corporation, and briefly review the history of TOF/TOF instruments.
Tandem instruments can combine high mass accuracy with high-speed measurement, greatly facilitating the analysis of complex mixtures.
A general characteristic of recent mass spectrometers is that most are composed of a sequence of multiple mass analyzers with different strengths and properties, resulting in tandem instruments that possess capabilities unattainable by the individual components (Fig. 1A).
Additionally, multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) enhances sensitivity and selectivity of tandem instruments.
Here we describe a simple database-free approach, pepgrep, for searching peptide pattern matching in CID MS2 data files that were obtained from popular types of MS tandem instruments.

We describe the design of a tandem instrument combining a low-energy electron microscope (LEEM) and a negative ion accelerator.
Optimal operation conditions for different mass spectrometers and modes of operation of a tandem instrument may differ significantly, producing the need to compromise in the performance of one mass spectrometer at the expense of another [14] [16].
However, a fully synergetic approach, i.e. by exploiting the spectral and directional information from all tandem mission instruments together, is an attractive alternative which is explored in this paper.
AISA Eagle and Hawk are tandem hyperspectral instruments with 244 and 240 contiguous bands distributed across the 400-970 nm and 1000-2400 nm ranges respectively.
The TOF mass analyzer covers the entire mass range, e.g., m/ z 100 1000 shown here, and not only a few channels as in the selected or multiple reaction monitoring modes used on tandem quadrupole instruments for ultrasensitive detection.
However the large volumes of MS2 datasets produced by modern tandem MS instruments make manual examination very inconvenient and thus an automated database-free peptide-centric algorithm for fast matching and viewing of a sequence pattern in MS2 scans is thought to be beneficial.
