Prep1 is a developmentally essential TALE class homeodomain transcription factor.
The paired/paired-like and TALE class proteins are generally regarded as distantly related sister groups to the Hox-proteins, while Nk and ParaHox sequences are generally regarded as more closely related sister groups.
Although Bcd homologs have been identified only in close relatives of Drosophila, we show in this paper that the ability to act in both transcriptional and translational levels is conserved in some mammalian homeodomain proteins, and that at least the TALE class protein Prep1 specifically represses translation of Hoxb4 mRNA.
While no significant differences in diversity are found for PRD, POU, LIM, SIX, and TALE class genes, the most striking difference is the absence of any extended Hox or any Hox/ParaHox-like genes in the Porifera (as represented by Amphimedon [16]).
Genes belonging to the TALE class encode proteins with various domains outside of the atypical homeodomain.
These additional residues are inserted at a different position compared to the TALE class, being between the second and third alpha helices (Additional file 6).
