Some bacteriophages, such as Enterobacteria phage T4, have a complex structure consisting of an icosahedral head bound to a helical tail, which may have a hexagonal base plate with protruding protein tail fibres.
An example of such adaptive interplay are phages that modify their receptor binding protein (RBP) or tail fibres to target a new cell surface receptor if the original receptor becomes unavailable as seen in Escherichia coli phage cI26 [ 6, 7].
BJ1 can also be assigned to the Bradley classification group B and might tentatively be assigned to the family Siphoviridae due to the apparent absence of a contractile tail, base plate and tail fibres and the presence of striations in the tail fibre.
Recent study suggests that coevolutionary interactions between bacteria and their lytic phage involve adaptations to the initial phases of the interaction, that is, tail fibres in the phage (Paterson et al. 2010) and surface proteins in the bacterium (e.g. Chapman-McQuiston and Wu 2008).

The gene for the tail fibre protein complex (orf119) of the phage 812K1/420 contains a premature stop codon due to a 77-bp deletion that divides this gene into 2 ORFs.

In addition, in phage KVP40, the duplication of three genes encoding proteins associated with the phage tail or the tail fibre (gp12, gp19, and gp37) suggests added flexibility in the range of host adaptation and the infection process [ 8].
