The Imperial Valley provides a 25th of the country's lettuce, broccoli, wheat, cauliflower and other table crops and, thanks to weather that allows for year-round growing, about a seventh of the country's wintertime table needs.

Groundwater P concentrations from this study were higher than reported elsewhere due to low soil P storage capacity (SPSC), high hydraulic conductivity of sandy soils, and a high water table beneath crop beds.

Its prodigious table grape crop became symbolic of the farmworkers' struggle, when grape-pickers from the Delano area walked off the fields and refused to collect the ripening fruit to protest their poor wages and abysmal living conditions.
Machinery available on the farm is shown in Table 2. Crop operations that require machinery not common to this type of farm can be bought in as contract machinery with associated labour (specifically the 'swather' for cutting oilseed rape and baler for straw).
Further, by leaching into the porous coral foundations of atolls, seawater displaces the fresh groundwater table, poisoning crops and reducing the already limited amount of fresh water available.
