Rickford tells us that "language learning and use would be virtually impossible without systematic rules and restrictions; this generalization applies to all varieties of language, including vernaculars".
But the "systematic rules and restrictions" that I referred to in my essay were descriptive, in the linguistics sense of "relating to... the description of a language... without regard to... advocated norms for correct or proper usage," as the American Heritage Dictionary puts it, rather than prescriptive, in the sense of "indicating how a language should or should not be used".
Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-randomised trials (quasi-RCTs) will be included in this systematic review without restrictions on time or language.
