The Great Southern Reef is a system of rocky reefs covered by kelp forests that runs for 2,300km along the south coast of Australia, extending past Sydney on the east coast, down to Tasmania and, previously, back up to Kalbarri on the west coast.
Ningaloo Reef is the other major coastal system of coral reefs in NWA, and the northern tip of this system is located about 300 km south-west of the Dampier Archipelago (Fig. 1).
Roughly three miles wide and twenty-nine milonglong, it is surrounded by a turquoise sea and an extensive system of coral reefs; its economy prospers, with luxury hotels and tourists who come to snorkel and dive.
Lying off the Queensland coast, that great system of coral reefs and atolls owes its origin to a combination of continental drift (into warmer waters), rifting, sea-level change, and subsidence.
Also on the list of billionaire playgrounds: The Maldives, where billionaires head to enjoy a system of coral reefs off the coast of India; the Hamptons, where mansions, quaint beaches, and pulsing nightlife mix at the east end of Long Island, N.Y.; and Palm Beach, Fla., where perfect year-round weather and beachfront mansions have attracted billionaires like Donald Trump and John Kluge.
South of Miami, the Florida Keys contain the only system of shallow reef-building corals in the continental U.S.
The optical system of diurnal reef species, which are active in mostly bright light environments, is characterized by photopic image formation.
Form:function relationships in the visual systems of tropical reef fishes have received fairly rigorous attention in the literature, yet very little is known about their temperate analogues.
Spectral sensitivity experiments were conducted to assess the ability of the visual systems of temperate reef fishes to respond to colored light stimuli that covered the spectral range from UV (300 nm) to the far red (650 nm) in 10 nm steps (following Horodysky et al., 2008).
Results show a precarious sustainability index for the reef system of 45.87%.
