For data synthesis, articles were graded by type of evidence for association of risk factor with pesticide exposure as follows: 1 = association demonstrated in farmworkers; 2 = association demonstrated in nonfarmworker sample; 3 = plausible association proposed for farmworkers; or 4 = association plausible but not published for farmworkers.
To be retained for the literature synthesis, each article had to 1) present original data, 2) study children or adolescents or physicians involved in their care, 3) address the effects of insurance on access to or use of specialty care, and 4) be performed in the United States.
Therefore, it would be interesting to conduct a further review with a synthesis of articles that highlight the impact on QoL of treatments recommended for a haematological malignancy.
Two responses to cope with the expansion of knowledge have been better organisation and synthesis of articles, such as systematic reviews and guidelines, and increasing subspecialisation of clinicians.
The small size, diversity and fragmentation of this work, and the quite descriptive approach of many articles, makes systematic knowledge synthesis across the articles a challenging task that is not attempted here.
