The final sample of the disgustingness condition was 52 participants; nine additional participants were excluded from the final analysis because one failed to complete all the tasks; six had a more intense RHI during the asynchronous stroking condition; and two, during synchronous stroking, had a score of < 3 out of 20 on the scale measuring the intensity of the RHI.
We found no lateral spatial limits for the rubber hand illusion created by synchronous stroking within reaching distances.
In other words, if on the first trial a participant was tested for disownership using synchronous stroking, on the second trial testing would be for disownership using asynchronous stroking, on the third trial testing would be for ownership using synchronous stroking, and on the fourth trial testing would be for ownership using asynchronous stroking.
Finally, upon completion of the questionnaire, the entire procedure was repeated for the other condition: that is, if the first condition involved synchronous stroking, the second would be asynchronous.
We have already seen the Rubber Hand illusion, which indicates that one can feel a rubber hand as one's own after only a couple of minutes of synchronous stroking of one's hand and a rubber hand.
