Switchboards are the nodal points in any electrical system.
It has been a "theoretical" exchange since 1941, when its number began to be carried in a small way on spare mechanical switchboards in the W. 50th St. telephone bldg., the home of such exchanges as Columbus, Circle, etc.
As switchboards and the telephone industry grew, multiple switchboards were lined up side by side inside an entire room.

Every morning, starting about 10 a.m., Mrs. Graffman would call the switchboard in the Osborne, the apartment house at 205 West 57th Street where Mr. Cliburn lived in the mid-1950s and where the Graffmans have lived since 1962.
It became "physical" by opening its own switchboard in the phone bldg.
