They came with braised Belgian endive, red and yellow sweet pepper strips in a pleasing sweet-tangy thyme sauce, tantalized with lemon, a pinch of sugar and endive broth.
Since four side dishes (sugar-sprinkled sweet potato strips, fried potato cubes, fresh collard greens and down-home corn pudding) accompany all entrees, only the truly famished should even consider the appetizers.
It offers a bright, cheerfully cacophonous ambience, along with diner classics like Reuben sandwiches, roast chicken and, yes, BLTs (served here on sourdough bread, with sweet, meaty strips of D'Artagnan bacon, and, if you choose, a side of decidedly unsoggy, hand-cut fries).
Outstanding entrees were a roasted duck ($13) sporting crisp skin and smooth, moist meat united with a robust, fruity sauce; and a tender, slightly fatty, braised lamb shank ($14) given a semisweet send-off by its currants and sweet potato strips.
