"swath" is a perfectly acceptable word in written English
You can use it as a noun to refer to a large area of something, especially something that is cut or altered in some way, such as a "swath of land" or a "swath of destruction". You can also use it as a verb to mean cut, mow, or otherwise alter something. For example, "The farmer swathed his wheat field to prepare it for harvest."
