When these components were measured directly, tuning amplitudes were indeed higher for turned-off orientations (switches from H or V to blank, 0.58 ± 0.28 mad, ×10−5 Δ F/ F) than for sustained orientations (V to V or H to H, 0.14 ± 0.16 mad, ×10−5 Δ F/ F; n = 48; paired two-tailed sign test P < 0.0001).
