Crucially, combining the antibiotic and the phage had a synergistic effect on bacterial survival, with only one of 24 populations surviving (lower than the control, phage, or antibiotic treatment, P < 0.001; Fig. 1A; see raw data in Figure S3).
The winners advance, with the surviving lower seed playing the Los Angeles Galaxy (No. 1 over all in the regular season) and the other playing the winner of the Eastern Conference in the M.L.S. Cup quarterfinals.
