Two of his earliest surviving works are signed illustrations for a manuscript of the Persian poet Saʿdī's classic Golestān ("The Rose Garden").
Instead he turned it into a novel - although the slang glossary and illustrations survived - and the rest was not history, but something more cutting edge (futurology perhaps?).
And while it's not that surprising considering he comes from the webcomics community, where artists frequently give away their primary product and are happy to survive on merch, illustration gigs and other secondary sources of income, it's still a very good thing.
