In cardiac-restricted Cx43 knock-out mice selected for longer term survival, reduction of coupling resulting from declining ventricular Cx43 leads to propagation of the impulse across numerous Purkinje/working ventricular myocyte junctions that normally remain dormant, thereby creating abnormal activation patterns and wave-front collisions in the ventricular myocardium.
