We investigated recent temporal changes in overall PC survival, divided into four calendar periods, and the impact of comorbidity on all-cause mortality within these periods.
To summarise median survival data we used the median survival ratio, MSR (treated survival divided by control survival) as an approach consistent with the gold standard hazard ratio method (Michiels et al, 2005; Tierney et al, 2007).
For each gender, we conducted relative survival analysis (defined as observed survival divided by expected survival, adjusting for expected mortality that the cohort would have from all causes of death [ 14]).
For example, Rachet et al [ 12] consider that one and five year survival divided by tumour type and sex should not be presented as an indicator at the level of primary care organisation because of small numbers; however, at SHA level, and cancer network, these data can be presented with confidence intervals.
The percent change in mean survival was calculated as the mean survival of animals from the odor side minus the mean survival of animals from the Ctrl side divided by the mean odor side survival or the mean transgenic animal survival minus the mean wild-type survival divided by the mean wild-type survival.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.08722.005 To assay the effect of DMOG on early cell survival, dividing cells were pulse-labeled with BrdU in adult mice just prior to DMOG administration, and the number of BrdU-labeled cells in the dentate gyrus was counted at several timepoints post-BrdU injection (dpi).
Relative survival rates were calculated as the absolute survival rates divided by the expected survival rates in the absence of cancer (Ederer et al, 1961).
The RSR is the absolute survival rate divided by the expected survival rate in the period of diagnosis from the general population with the same sex and age structure 34, 35.
The amount of services delivered was calculated as the total days on which services were utilized during the survival time divided by the number of months of survival to create a continuous time-dependent variable.
