To demonstrate how survey effort for environmental monitoring can be optimised, we applied the new statistical power analysis R package simr to pilot survey data.
Although there was high variability in sighting frequency at intermediate levels of effort (i.e. 50 500 dives), there were no significant trends of sighting frequency with survey effort for all sharks (slope = −0.002, S.E. = 0.003, p = 0.28) or for all sharks excluding nurse sharks (slope = −0.002, S.E. = 0.002, p = 0.41) (Fig. 2).

Note that the particular surveying effort required for the marked recount method does not depend on decay time (so long as it is much longer than the inter-survey period) while the required surveying effort for accurate results using the matrix method would increase with longer decay times (as its accuracy depends on including many nests that completely decay).
In survey of wildlife populations such biases can be avoided by randomising the location of the survey effort, using for example a randomly positioned grid of survey lines, to give each animal an equal probability of inclusion in the sample.
We evaluate survey effort trade-offs for hypothetical species representing different levels of occupancy and detection (p) probability to identify optimal design strategies.
22 However, a rule of thumb for survey effort based on assuming the invasive plant will not be seen in a future survey (so further costs of survey and possible escape are ignored) provides a good solution, even if it is not optimal.
Encounter rates were corrected by an offset term for varying survey effort (i.e. total transect length).
We discuss lessons learned from this survey effort and present a revised protocol for future interview-based bycatch assessments.
The characterizations were suitable for statistical evaluation in near-real time to assess the return on continued survey effort and to recognize dynamic areas for subsequent survey focus.
While the potential for reduction in survey effort is a function of environmental variability, the strength of this approach lies in the ability to establish in-stride the minimum effort required for a fidelity threshold without a first-guess field or a priori knowledge.
From the analysis of survey effort, we suggest two design options for point-based monitoring of shrubland birds in pine barrens: (1) include enough points to cover at least ∼3% of the study area and survey each point ≥5 times preferably during 05:00–08:00 hr, or (2) reduce the point sample, to no less than about 2% of study area, and increase the survey replication to ≥10 surveys.
