These leaves passively capture prey that are lured to the leaf's mouth by its glistening surfaces or unusual colouration and transparent patches.
The tubes are up to 8 mm in depth, have the same colouration as the surface of the hymenium, and are distinctively layered.
Scales patterns, by way of scale surface or texture, pattern and colouration and the division of the anal plate, in combination with other morphological characteristics, are the principal means of classifying snakes down to species level.
For each lizard, we took a colour measurement on the breast, in the middle of the belly and on the anal plate, each corresponding to the average colouration of a surface of approximately 1 mm2, avoiding black spots.
Reaction for both stains was quantified, scoring the percentage of stigmas showing colouration on the stigma surface.
Neoceratodus are strongly countershaded (Fig. 1), having an olive-green to dark brown colouration on the dorsal surface and a pale underside that varies from light orange to pinkish red in adults (Fig. 4B).
The important thing here is that in particular the field guides and keys noted the outward appearance of these species as highly variable in terms of colouration, size and body surface texture, thus well covering the cryptic species.
