The crystalline and amorphous peaks were deconvoluted via peak fitting (Supplementary Fig. 6).
R2 along with the p-value were derived from F-test for the overall statistical significance of the linear fitting (Supplementary Table 1).
The HS/ HG ratio (supplementary table S1, Supplementary Material online) fits a normal distribution (W = 0.9769, P value = 0.4988) and the mean of the distribution (m = 1.15) is not significantly different from 1 (t = 1.0001, degrees of freedom = 45, P value = 0.3226).

The strongest association with red hair is located around the MC1R gene on human chromosome 16 (Fig. 1a, Supplementary Table 1, Supplementary Figure 1a), which fits with the expectation that this locus is the principal genetic factor determining red hair colour.
