At the opening, Kesa (the fine-voiced Idina Menzel), a Japanese woman in a silk kimono, sings of seeing her lover, Morito (the superb Marc Kudisch), for the last time, in words that don't quite have that medieval ring: "He knifes into my body / Forcibly and proud / (My lover is incredibly endowed)." In the first scene set in Japan, Kesa kills Morito; in the second, Morito strangles Kesa.
MARC-ANDRÉ HAMELIN This superb Canadian pianist is a persuasive interpreter in everything from the chiseled Classicism of Haydn to the mind-bending Romanticism of Scriabin.
