The super hardness in nano-composite thin films is obtained when the small crystallites are detached by a discrepant boundary with the high cohesive strength (Patscheider et al).
The NaCl type CrN/AlN coatings exhibit super hardness above 40 GPa at Λ of 3.0 4 nm.
