When I'd shout 'I see her!' my mother would say, 'It's just your blood sugar, my dear".' Katherine Waters of Norwalk remembers lunches with her grandmother at the Plaza, Ms. Waters in a smocked dress from Best & Company, her grandmother wearing white gloves and carrying a Kelly bag.
With shows like Blackish, Queen Sugar, and Dear White People populating the media landscape, more artists of color, particularly black men and women, are being recognized both in front of and behind the camera.
The advantages are three-fold: you can wander around the house, into the garden and even down the road, still listening to the show on the phone in your pocket; you don't miss the details; and thirdly and most importantly in the case of Dear Sugar Radio (wbur.org/series/dear-sugar), a new podcast gaining traction in the US, you're listening on your own.
But in the "Dear Sugar" column, the conceit is the opposite.
On March 11 , 2010 an anonymous writer introduced herself as the new voice of "Dear Sugar," an advice column on the Web site the Rumpus.
I wouldn't characterize the material in the "Dear Sugar" column as more intimate than my other nonfiction writing, but instead perhaps the voice is slightly more intimate.
There is even a sneak peak of the Rumpus' advice column, "Dear Sugar," whose editorial #48: "Write Like a Motherfucker," is reprinted in "Rumpus Women".
"Tiny Beautiful Things" is a selection of "Dear Sugar" columns from the Rumpus as well as several columns that will never appear on the Web site.
A precursor to Dear Sugar was Elizabeth M. Gilmer, who took mild-mannered questions from her female readers and churned out thorough and philosophical responses.
