This study was restricted to those who agreed to linkage of their responses to health administrative data sets and whose data were linked successfully (linkage rate, 84%); linkage was achieved using encrypted health card numbers that served as unique identifiers.
The resulting scoring strings for 24 markers (derived from 17 amplicons) were successfully linkage mapped, as shown in Figure 3 and listed in Additional file 3, to the expected regions of the genome, i.e. 14 markers on linkage groups A3, A5, C1 and C5, and 10 markers on linkage groups A1, A3 and A5.

Biallelic QTL methods have been shown to successfully detect linkage for multiallelic QTLs [ 50- 53].
While AFLP markers have been used successfully for linkage mapping in the related Silene vulgaris, the resulting maps derived from the maternal and paternal parent, respectively, could not be joined into a single, unifying map, because of the limited information on coupling phase provided by dominant markers [ 16].
This year's team built a gap map that successfully mapped linkages between interventions and outcomes, indicating which areas are lacking in research.
Of the three genes that were identified to contain shared polymorphisms (lp5, pr4.1, wrky-like-1) lp-5 was successfully mapped to linkage group 3 using mapping populations and did not show a significant deviation from expected Mendelian patterns in the FBRC-families it was segregating in (lowest P = 0.087,χ2 = 2.92 df = 1)).
STRs have been used successfully to identify linkage disequilibrium between pairs of loci, such as CD4 [ 44] and G6PD [ 45].
Together with the position information of the genes in the current assembly, we have successfully assigned eight linkage groups to eight different chromosomes.
Many monogenetic Mendelian disorders, including mutations in the familial breast and ovarian cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, have been successfully mapped using linkage analysis [ 18, 19].
Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) markers [ 9] have been identified as a valuable tool in cereals and have been employed successfully to create linkage maps of the triticale parents wheat [ 10- 14] and rye [ 15].
This approach was successfully applied in linkage studies of families to map the causal mutation for many mono-genetic diseases, and sets of several hundreds of genome-wide VNTR markers were sufficient to identify loci such as the BRCA1 locus or the cystic fibrosis gene locus.
