This was followed by a presentation from Carlos Arteaga (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA), speaking about successes with pathway inhibitors such as herceptin, which inhibits HER2/ErbB2, and Iressa, which inhibits EGF receptor/ErbB1, and how these agents can have synergistic effects.
The accumulated wealth of knowledge and developed genetic tools, as well as previous successes in pathway engineering and metabolite production (Chao et al. 1993; Farmer and Liao 2001; Martin et al. 2003) as well as amino acid production (Ikeda 2003), make E. coli an attractive host for higher chain alcohol production via the 2-keto acid pathways.
The good news is that with creative and imaginative thinking and the will to focus on student success, these pathways also offer institutions of higher education new opportunities to share resources and create new efficiencies in this era of shrinking budgets.
