The decision came a week after the resignation of the Subway marketing director, Chris Carroll, who helped select Goodby, Silverstein to follow Fallon.
Don Fertman, Subway's director of development, said that roughly 20percentt of about 2,800 stores that Subway expects to open by year's end would be run by former executives.
By way of illustration, yet another piece of Don Harold subway trivia: The director William Friedkin wanted to direct the famous subway chase sequence in "The French Connection" beneath an elevated line in the Bronx.
For the film writer or director, the subway also just arrives with useful metaphoric associations, invoking physiology (guts, arteries!), and underworlds both psychic and spiritual.
Mr. Cortese, the senior director of subway operations training, said that some of the people who become train operators have, in fact, never even driven a car before.
"A half a million people a day come through the Times Square subway station," said Sandra Bloodworth, director of the Arts for Transit Program.
