In "Illuminated Manuscripts and the Dawn of Printing," through Oct. 26, they include a Gutenberg Bible, the first substantial printed book in the West, from about 1455; selections from the illuminated Towneley Lectionary (c. 1550-60); the illuminated "Medici Aesop" from the late 15th century; and "Isoho Monogatari" (1659), the first Aesop's fables in Japan to be illustrated.
As "the first substantial printed book in the West," the Bible is a product of Gutenberg's development of printing with movable type, "arguably the greatest achievement of the second millennium" (NYPL Rare Book Division 2009).
