Among the 12 patients who acquired M. abscessus for the first time during contact with our hospital, 11 acquired M. abscessus subsp abscessus strains (3 VNTR I, 3 VNTR II, and 5 with unique VNTR profiles) [ 9], and 1 individual acquired M. abscessus subsp massiliense (Table 1).

However, macrophages infected with subsp. novicida (4A(i)) induced the greatest production of nitric oxide, with up to 50 µM present at 48 hr after challenge, despite the ability of subsp. novicida to replicate in these cells.
As shown in figure 4B, addition of nitric oxide inhibitor to the macrophages led to an increase in intracellular replication of 2 3 logs for both subsp. novicida (4B(i)) and subsp. tularensis (4B ii)) when compared to infected macrophages without inhibitor added.
For this validation, we used (i) two draft genomes, Staphylococcus hominis SK119 and Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus TCH60, and (ii) one completed genome, Yersinia pestis CO92.
As seen in Figure 2B(i), 2 to 4 lof10 of subsp. novicida were present intracellularly at 3 hr after infection with 10 and 100 MOI, as seen previously.
Three subspecies (subsp) are pathogenic for humans: F. tularensis subsp tularensis (type A strain), F. tularensis subsp holarctica (type B strain) and F. tularensis subsp mediasiatica.
Instead, a very high discriminatory power for all the F. tularensis subsp. holarctica genetic groups that are known to be present in Sweden would be desired, i.e., groups B1 to B4 in Figure 1.
We also included sequences from two bacteria that are relatively distant from Shewanellae, i.e., Deinococcus radiodurans R1 and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype Typhimurium LT2 (S. Typhimurium) [22], [23], [24].
